Zeekr 001: China’s Fast-Charging EV That’s Redefining the Game

A Quiet Contender from Geely

The Zeekr 001 is a sleek electric fastback from China, built by the Geely Group — the same automotive giant behind Polestar, Lotus, and Volvo. Despite strong backing and solid popularity in its home market, the 001 never reached the United States, and only a small number have made their way to Europe.

Charging Ahead of the Competition

First launched in 2021, the Zeekr 001 has already seen three major updates in just four years. Its second refresh in 2024 introduced an 800‑volt battery system capable of charging at over 500 kilowatts, allowing a 10‑to‑80% top‑up in just 12 minutes. That performance outpaced every EV sold in the U.S., where the Lucid Gravity currently leads with a maximum input of 400 kW and a 27‑minute 0‑to‑80% charge time.

Now, with its third refresh, Zeekr has pushed the boundaries even further. Just ten seconds after plugging in, the car hits peak power, delivering 894 volts and 1,488 amps. From there, charging is rapid: 50% in about three minutes, 80% in six and a half.

Range and Real-World Performance

On China’s CLTC testing cycle, the 001 reported an estimated range of 353 miles (568 km) after a near‑full charge. On the stricter EPA test, that figure would likely be closer to 250 miles — still impressive considering it takes less than seven minutes to reach 80%.

A full charge from 4% took just 13 minutes and 23 seconds, unlocking a claimed 441 miles (710 km) of range on the CLTC cycle. But as with most EVs, charging to 100% isn’t practical on road trips, since the time nearly doubles compared to stopping at 80%.

Infrastructure Matters

The Zeekr 001’s blistering charging speeds highlight a new reality: the petrol station comparison no longer applies. However, to take advantage of seven‑minute charging stops, drivers need access to powerful DC fast chargers.

While the U.S. and Europe currently rely on 350 kW stations, China has already rolled out megawatt‑capable chargers that make ultra‑fast charging a reality. Western markets are working to catch up, with several operators testing next‑generation charging technology.

The refreshed Zeekr 001 shows just how quickly EV technology is evolving. With charging times that rival a coffee break, it sets a new benchmark for what’s possible — even if the infrastructure outside China still has some catching up to do.
