The Volkswagen ID.3 uses a Type 2 connection for AC charging. All of the cables and portable chargers listed on this page are compatible with the ID.3, but the charging rate varies between versions of the car. Current UK models use different battery sizes and can accept either 7.2kW or 11kW AC depending on the version.
The right charging cable therefore depends on both the ID.3 and where you intend to charge it. For a home wallbox or public AC charging point you will normally need a Type 2 to Type 2 cable. A portable 3-pin charger provides a slower backup option, while CEE / Commando chargers can be used where a suitable industrial supply is available.
Which Type 2 Charging Cable Is Best for the VW ID.3?
For an untethered wallbox or a public AC charging point with a Type 2 socket, choose a Type 2 to Type 2 charging cable.
For ID.3 versions capable of 11kW three-phase AC charging, we recommend the 3 Phase 32A Type 2 charging cable. It allows the vehicle to use three-phase AC charging where available and can also be used safely at lower-powered compatible charging points.
The 3 Phase 32A cable is rated for up to 22kW, but this does not mean an 11kW ID.3 will charge at 22kW. The car’s onboard charger controls the maximum AC power accepted.
If the vehicle is mainly charged from a typical single-phase 7kW home wallbox, a 1 Phase 32A Type 2 cable can also be suitable. The three-phase cable provides greater flexibility if the car is later used at compatible three-phase charging points.
Can I Charge a VW ID.3 from a 3-Pin Socket?
Yes. A VW ID.3 can be charged from a suitable UK household socket using a Type 2 portable 3-pin charger. However, because the ID.3 has a much larger battery than many early electric cars, charging a substantially discharged battery from a household socket can take a long time.
For that reason, 3-pin charging is best suited to occasional use, overnight top-ups or as a portable backup where a dedicated EV charging point is unavailable.
For regular use from a suitable socket, we recommend the adjustable 6A / 8A / 10A portable charger. A properly installed EV wallbox remains the more practical option for routine home charging.
Can I Charge a VW ID.3 from a CEE / Commando Socket?
Yes. A suitable portable CEE charger can be used where an appropriate industrial electrical outlet is available. These sockets may be found at some workplaces, commercial premises, workshops, campsites and other locations with industrial power supplies.
CEE sockets differ by phase and current rating. Blue sockets are normally single phase, while red sockets are normally three phase; both 16A and 32A versions are available. The portable charger must match the actual socket.
The ID.3 will still control the maximum power it accepts, so connecting an 11kW-capable ID.3 to charging equipment rated above 11kW will not force the car to charge above its onboard AC limit.

Earlier ID.3 versions were also offered with different battery capacities and specifications, so owners of older cars should check the exact vehicle specification when comparing charging times. A higher-capacity charging cable is safe to use with a lower-powered ID.3 because the car determines how much AC power it accepts.

Home wallbox or public Type 2 charging point: choose a Type 2 to Type 2 cable; the three-phase version provides the greatest flexibility for 11kW-capable models.
UK household socket: choose an adjustable VW ID.3 portable 3-pin charger for occasional or backup charging.
