Good news for millions of EV drivers across England: charging your car is about to get a whole lot easier. The UK government has announced a major expansion in local chargepoints — perfect for those without off-street parking.
100,000+ New Chargepoints Coming Soon
On 13 June 2025, Future of Roads Minister Lilian Greenwood revealed plans to install over 100,000 local chargepoints in the coming years. These additions will build on the 80,000+ public chargepoints already available across the UK, making overnight charging more accessible than ever.
Funding and Investment Breakdown
- The rollout is backed by the £381 million Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (LEVI) Fund.
- The government is pumping £4 billion into supporting EV adoption, securing trade deals to boost British carmakers, and helping families save money.
- £300 million in private funding from Believ will deliver an extra 30,000 chargepoints UK-wide.
- Private investors are expected to contribute another £6 billion by 2030 to expand the network even further.
Lilian Greenwood, Future of Roads Minister, says the government is “powering up the EV revolution” by installing one chargepoint every 29 minutes and supporting drivers through both investment and innovation.
Believ CEO Guy Bartlett praised the partnership between government and industry, calling it “a powerful vote of confidence in the EV transition.”
Suffolk County Council is leading the charge as the first to sign on with a chargepoint operator, with more councils expected to follow quickly. Streamlined regulations are helping fast-track installations — making it easier than ever for drivers to save up to £1,110 a year by charging at home.
