10A 3-Pin Charger For Charging All Models Of The Audi SQ8.

This portable 3-pin EV charger is capable of charging the Audi SQ8 at 10A, providing approximately 2.3kW of power. The 3 pin charger is also referred to as the granny charger, home charger, mains charger and “brick”.

Simply plug the charger into a standard 3-pin 13A socket for a 10A charge. We recommend this type of charger as an emergency backup.

If you are going to charge your Audi SQ8 for prolonged periods using a 13A socket, then we recommend our adjustable current charger. This type of charger lets you charge at lower currents, which helps to avoid heat stress on the mains socket.

Additionally, the adjustable current feature allows the vehicle to lower the current as needed, if the vehicle software allows.

The variable charger also includes DC current protection equivalent to a Type B RCD and has a timer that allows you to schedule charging to start anywhere from 1 to 10 hours after plugging in.

Most chargers sold in the UK are restricted to 10A for safety reasons. Charging at this current significantly diminishes the risk of the 13A socket overheating. Consequently, we will not offer for sale any 3-pin charger capable of charging at 13A due to the increased risk of damage it may cause to the 3-pin socket.

Is This 3 Pin Charger Suitable For The Audi SQ8?

Choosing The Right Charger

The Audi SQ8 has a Type 2 socket as standard, ensuring compatibility with this charger.

Charging an EV for long periods with a 13A socket may cause thermal damage to the socket. For instance, the socket may overheat in cases where it has damaged or faulty wiring, or when the electrical circuit is overloaded. It is rare, but it does happen.

For this reason, we strongly recommend having an electrician inspect the intended socket to certify its suitability for charging the Audi SQ8.

We understand that, at times, you might be charging your Audi SQ8 with a socket that has not been certified by an electrician. In such instances, we recommend the adjustable current charger as it provides additional protection for the 3-pin socket.

It is also a good idea to check, after a few hours of charging, that both the plug and socket are not becoming excessively hot during charging.

Avoid using an extension lead or adapter with this 3-pin charger. Plug the charger directly into the socket. Ensure that water does not come into contact with the 3-pin plug or the Type 2 plug, and keep the charger dry when not in use. Before connecting the charger to the Audi SQ8, be sure to read the user booklet included with the charger.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use this charger every day?

Charging your Audi SQ8 e-tron at 10A requires the socket and electrical circuit to be certified by a qualified electrician. A dedicated circuit is recommended to minimise the risk of overheating caused by a circuit overloaded by other appliances running on the same circuit. This charger is recommended to be used if you require a top up charge or in cases of emergencies. If you are regularly charging your vehicle with a 240V 3-pin socket, we recommend the variable current charger as this is more suitable for safer EV charging over long periods.

Can I use this charger overnight?

It is not recommended to charge your vehicle over prolonged periods using this charger, unless the socket is certified to do so by a qualified electrician. If you intending to regularly charge your vehicle using a 3-pin charger or you are charging your vehicle at a socket where the condition of the socket is unknown, on holiday for example, then it is safer to charge at a lower current and to also have a temperature sensor inside the 3-pin plug. This is possible with our variable current charger.

What are the charging speeds of a 3-pin charger?

The approximate charging speeds for charging the Audi SQ8 e-tron from a 13A mains socket is 6 to 9 miles of charge per every hour of charging.

Charging speeds are influenced by the health and efficiency of the Audi SQ8 e-tron’s battery, weather temperature and if the plug or socket is getting too hot.

Is the charger waterproof?

This charger consists of four main components: the 3-pin plug, the cable, the control box (unit), and the Type 2 plug. Each of these components has different levels of water resistance.

3-Pin Plug: The plug should be safe from water if you are plugging it into an indoor socket. If you are using an outdoor socket, the 3-pin plug needs to be protected and you should therefore use a weatherproof socket.

Cable: The cable is waterproof as long as there are no cuts or tears in the cable sheath.

Control Box: The standard control box is IP65-rated. This rating means that the control box can withstand light rain. If you are placing the control box outside, you can select the option to upgrade to the IP67-rated control box with our variable current charger. The IP67 rating means that the control box is fully waterproof and can be left outside in any weather.

Type 2 Plug: The Type 2 plug is built with an outer shell that is designed to withstand rain and snow when connected to the vehicle socket. The vehicle socket is also designed to be watertight and should therefore provide protection from water ingress when the Type 2 plug is connected. A common way for water to enter the Type 2 plug is when the plug cap is replaced after charging. The plug cap must always be replaced after charging your vehicle, but do ensure that the inside of the plug cap is dry. Avoid leaving the plug lying around outside, do not drag or drop the Type 2 plug on the ground and store the charger in a dry place when not in use.

My vehicle model is not listed. Is it still compatible with this charger?

If your vehicle has a CCS socket or Type 2 socket, then this charger is fully compatible with your vehicle. Please read the information in the product details to see a photo of what a CCS or Type 2 socket looks like.
