Type 1 Charging Cables
The Type 1 charging cable refers to the plug that is inserted into the socket of the vehicle. The Type 1 plug has 5 pins and a button on top of the plug. You may therefore hear the term Type 1 to 3 pin charging cable and Type 1 to Type 2 charging cable and this identifies that the charging cable can be used either with a 3 pin socket (Type 1 to 3 pin) or with a Type 2 charging station or wall charger (Type 1 to Type 2). A Type 2 charging station represents the vast majority of public charging points and home wall chargers.
Type 1 socket vehicles are less common than their Type 2 vehicle socket counterparts. The most popular Type 1 socket vehicles are the Mitsubishi Outlander, Nissan Leaf (manufactured between 2012 - 2017), the Nissan NV200 and the Toyota Prius (manufactured between 2011 - 2016). Type 1 vehicles are mainly PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles) and they will accept less current, so you will only find cables that can charge up to 1 Phase 16A or 32A. Some Type 1 vehicles will also have a rapid charging CHAdeMO socket, which will enable you to charge the vehicle at a faster rate than the Type 1 to Type 2 cable. The CHAdeMO socket is for DC rapid charging is only available in public locations. You do not need to buy a cable to use a DC rapid charger as the cable is always attached to the unit.
If you are looking to buy a Type 1 charging cable, we sell the Type 1 to Type 2 charging cable, Type 1 to 3 Pin charger and the Type 1 to CEE charger, so you will be able to find a cable to charge your EV using a public charging station or home wall box, a 230V 3 pin 13A mains socket, or a 230V CEE / Commando socket.
All of the Type 1 cables listed below are compatible with a Type 1 socket vehicle. What you need to know is which charging cable is the best fit for your vehicle. You should be able to find the maximum charging capacity of the AC onboard charger in your vehicle manual or you can locate your vehicle using our EV Finder. Please note that your Type 1 socket EV can be charged with ANY of the Type 1 charging cables listed below, regardless of the charging capacity of the onboard charger or the current of the charging station. For example, if you purchase a Type 1 to Type 2 32A cable that can charge up to 7.4kW, it will be suitable for charging an EV that only has a maximum charging capacity of 3.6kW.
