The 3 pin charging cable can be used in any country that supports the 3 pin plug. This portable charger is not manufactured by BMW. Please refer to your vehicle handbook for information about charging your vehicle. Charging your BMW vehicle using a 3 pin charging cable may cause a high load on the mains circuit if it is shared by other appliances. 3 pin chargers are therefore recommended for occasional use due to the increased risk of thermal damage caused by continuous loads at 10A.

Why do most 3 pin chargers only charge at 10A?

When charging your EV using a 13A socket, a safety limit of 10A is imposed. While a 3 pin socket can handle a maximum current of 13A, the average 13A socket is designed to endure this level of current for only short periods of time. The 3 pin charger is the slowest EV charging method, necessitating several hours of charging that inevitably subjects the socket to significant heat stress. As a consequence, charging your vehicle with 13A instead of 10A is more likely to lead to thermal damage to both the plug and socket.

The established safe practice for charging an EV with a household or any 13A 3-pin socket is to charge within the range of 6A to 10A. 3 pin chargers are available with the capability to charge at 13A. Despite the slightly faster charging rate offered by a 3 pin 13A charger, we choose not to sell them due to safety concerns. Even charging at 10A carries a risk of thermal damage, especially if the EV is being charged over long durations. Unless an electrician certifies that the socket and circuit are suitable for regular 10A charging, we recommend our Type 2 to 3 pin adjustable amp charging cable. A 3 pin charging cable supporting 6A and 8A is also considered safer for temporary use with 3 pin sockets that have not been tested by an electrician. This choice significantly reduces the risk of damage when charging your vehicle, whether on holiday or using the household socket of a family or friend.

Before charging your vehicle with a 3-pin charger, it is important to have a qualified electrician inspect the 13A socket and electrical circuit to certify its suitability for prolonged use at 10A. This ensures that the power outlet intended for regular EV charging is suitable and is safeguarded against potential overheating issues. Do not plug the charger into an extension cord or adapter. If the unit is left outdoors in the rain, exercise caution and make sure it is not placed in standing water.

Please read the safety information in the user manual included with this charger before using it. If you do not receive this information, please contact us.

Charging cable checklist

To ensure that the cable you purchase is right for you, please read the following checklist:

  • Make sure the charging cable is compatible with your vehicle. The photos at the top of the page show you what the pins in the connectors look like so you can match the cable to your vehicle.
  • Make sure that the length of the cable is sufficient to reach the charging socket of your vehicle. We recommend allowing at least half a metre so that the cable is not overstretched.
  • If you do not have your electric vehicle yet, please check with the manufacturer or dealer / seller to confirm if it is already equipped with a 3 pin charging cable.
  • Please check with your manufacturer or dealer to confirm that a Fixed Amp charger is suitable for your vehicle. Your dealer may recommend that your EV needs a charging cable that can adjust the charging current. We stock charging cables that can vary the current if this is the case.

If in doubt, please contact us via our contact page.
